- Years of hands-on commercial experience, and the kind of work — ground-up, TI, gear, underground
- Licences and certifications: journeyman card, OSHA 10 or 30, CDL, competent-person training
- A résumé or a plain work history; either is fine
- A valid driver's licence, because most roles drive to a site
